Theth or Valbona: planning the hike between both valleys
Theth suits shorter out-and-back walks, while Valbona offers a quieter valley. The pass between them requires a full hiking day, two nights and confirmed trail conditions.
The page diagram explains decisions; it is not a navigation map, forecast or local trail check.

THREE SCENARIOS
One valley or the full crossing
Choose the trip scope before transport. Fitting the pass into an arrival or departure day makes the plan fragile.
Theth only
A base for the church, Grunas and one selected out-and-back walk.
- Calendar
- At least 2 days / 1 night
- Effort
- Flexible: short walk to long day
- Logistics
- Return through the same transport corridor
- Trade-off
- You miss the eastern valley
Valbona only
A quiet base among limestone walls without committing to the crossing.
- Calendar
- At least 2 days / 1 night
- Effort
- Chosen after a local check
- Logistics
- Separate inbound and return journey
- Trade-off
- Fewer obvious short landmarks
Both valleys via the pass
A full mountain crossing with a night before and after the hiking day.
- Calendar
- At least 3 days / 2 nights
- Effort
- High: long ascent and descent
- Logistics
- Different entry and exit points
- Trade-off
- Depends on trail, weather and luggage
PROTECTED ALPS
Two valleys in one protected system
Since 2022, Theth and Valbona have belonged to the same Albanian Alps National Park. Shared protection does not make their pace or logistics identical.
Theth: compact landmarks
The church, Grunas and walks from one base make the valley easier for a first short visit.
Valbona: valley scale
Accommodation and trailheads are more spread out, so confirm distances and local transport with your host.
MINIMUM CALENDAR
Three days that are not a timetable
This is a logical trip frame. Confirm departures, roads and meeting points separately.
- 1
Arrive in the first valley
Check in, confirm trail conditions and prepare only the load you can carry.
- 2
Crossing and second night
Start early only after the go/no-go check and end the day in the second valley.
- 3
Leave without another major hike
Keep energy and time in reserve for departure; do not assume perfect transport connections.
An extra night supports an out-and-back walk or weather buffer; poor weather does not become a crossing day.
PASS PROFILE
An effort guide, not navigation
Different guesthouses alter the start, finish and totals. The ranges estimate readiness; they do not guide you on the trail.
Text profile: a long ascent from the first valley to the saddle, followed by a prolonged descent into the second; direction does not remove the day’s overall demands.
15–17 km
Indicative distance between varying accommodation points.
About 1,000–1,200 m ascent
The long descent places a separate load on the knees.
7–9 hours with stops
Pace, trail conditions, group and accommodation alter the total.
These ranges do not confirm that the trail is open or safe today. A current local check is essential.
DIRECTION CHECK
There is no universally easier direction
Choose direction around the whole trip, not one description of the ascent.
- 01
Arrival point
Which transport corridor gets you most reliably to the first night.
- 02
Confirmed nights
Where the first and second beds and meals are actually confirmed.
- 03
Luggage and car
Where belongings stay and how the car returns to its owner.
- 04
Group profile
What is harder for your group: prolonged ascent or long descent.
- 05
Current local information
What hosts or a certified guide report about snow, water and waymarking.
ONE BASE
If you choose Theth only
Build a calm plan around one base and choose one long walk rather than chasing every landmark.
- 01
Church and valley centre
A short landmark for understanding the valley and its lived landscape.
Theth Church - 02
Grunas Waterfall
A separate walk whose length and condition should be checked locally.
Grunas Waterfall - 03
Blue Eye Theth
A substantial separate objective requiring its own time and energy reserve.
Blue Eye of Theth
Do not combine Blue Eye Theth with the full pass crossing on the same day.
EASTERN VALLEY
If you choose Valbona only
Valbona works as an independent mountain base: the broad valley, limestone walls and spread-out accommodation do not require a crossing to Theth.
Choose a shorter walk only after confirming its name, start and condition with your host or a local guide.
Valbona ValleyGO / NO-GO
Make the decision that morning, not from the calendar
If one critical item is not confirmed, postpone the crossing. Card colour is not the only decision signal.
Snow and trail condition
Get current information from both valleys or a certified guide.
Forecast and visibility
Assess the full hiking day, not only the morning window.
Storms and precipitation
Do not rely on beating a storm when the time margin is small.
Daylight
Start, pace and turnaround time must leave a real daylight reserve.
Group readiness
Plan around the slowest member and their experience with long descents.
Equipment and water
Footwear, sun and rain protection, water and food are required for everyone.
Offline navigation
Download a reliable map and know how to use it; this page does not guide you along the trail.
Turnaround time
Set it in advance and observe it even if the pass looks close.
No month alone confirms safety: snow, storms, heat and trail damage depend on actual conditions.
LOCAL JUDGEMENT
When a certified local guide is needed
A guide cannot change the weather, but helps assess route, pace and group decisions. AKZM recommends certified guides for trails of varying difficulty.
No long mountain-day experience
Urban walking does not replace ascent, descent and pacing experience.
Snow or unstable weather
When risk rises, a guide helps assess it; sometimes the correct decision is not to go.
Solo crossing
Without sufficient independent experience, the consequences of an error are greater.
Children or mixed-ability group
Plan around the least capable member and agreed decision points.
Leaving the principal crossing
Additional summits and deviations require separate competence and are outside this guide.
LUGGAGE LOOP
Luggage, car and Koman
The crossing connects different road corridors. Every bag and vehicle needs a confirmed onward plan.
- 01
Carry only the working kit
A day pack or light overnight pack must remain manageable on ascent and descent.
- 02
Confirm the main bag in writing
Storage or transfer exists only after confirmation from the specific provider.
- 03
Do not strand the car in one valley
Decide before the trip who retrieves the car, when and under what terms.
- 04
Verify every connection separately
Road, boat, transfer and accommodation do not form a guaranteed through-ticket.
Koman is an option, not a requirement
The lake can be a scenic access or exit for Valbona when actual connections are confirmed. Check prices and schedules before travel.
Lake Koman ferryShala River is a separate water trip
Do not include Shala on the crossing day. It is an independent trip from the Koman area.
Shala RiverWEATHER BUFFER
A fallback is part of the route, not a failure
Define the alternative before reaching the mountains, so poor weather does not force a risky choice because of bookings.
Stay in the first valley
Use the confirmed night and rebuild the next day without the pass.
Choose a shorter walk
Only after a local check of the specific route and its current condition.
Return through the arrival corridor
Postpone the crossing and leave by the method already confirmed.
Poor weather is not a reason to “at least reach the pass”; turn around before the hazardous section.
PROTECTED ALPS
Accessibility and responsible visiting
The crossing is not barrier-free. Protected status requires care even on popular sections.
Honest accessibility assessment
Uneven ground, ascent and long descent limit the route for reduced mobility.
Stay on the marked trail
Do not use the decorative profile as a map or cut switchbacks.
Carry everything out
Waste, including organic waste, does not remain in the valley or at the pass.
Respect animals and property
Do not disturb livestock, dogs or wildlife; respect private land and gates.

QUICK ANSWERS
Theth and Valbona FAQ
Should I choose Theth or Valbona?
Theth is easier for a first short visit with recognisable out-and-back objectives. Valbona offers a quieter base and eastern access. Choose by time and logistics.
How difficult is the crossing?
The guide range is 15–17 km, about 1,000–1,200 m ascent and 7–9 hours with stops. It is a serious mountain day, not a casual walk.
Which direction should I hike?
There is no universal answer. Consider arrival, nights, luggage, car, ascent/descent tolerance and current local information.
How many days do both valleys need?
The minimum logical frame is three calendar days and two nights. An extra night adds weather buffer or time for another walk.
Do I need a guide?
It is particularly appropriate without long mountain experience, with snow or poor visibility, solo without sufficient experience, with children or a mixed-ability group.
When is the trail accessible?
Accessibility cannot be determined by month alone. Confirm snow, trail, forecast, visibility and road access through current local sources.
What should I do with luggage and a car?
Carry only a manageable kit. Confirm main-bag storage or transfer and car retrieval in writing before the trip.
Is the Koman ferry required?
No. Koman is one possible scenic access or exit corridor for Valbona when its connections fit your trip.
Can I combine the crossing and Blue Eye Theth?
Not on the same day. Blue Eye is a separate substantial walk requiring an extra night and its own condition check.
