Renting a car and driving in Albania
A car opens up the Riviera, mountain bases and remote places, but it also demands careful checks of documents, insurance, road conditions and the rental contract. For central Tirana or a single resort, it is often unnecessary.

Start with the trip
Should you rent a car?
The answer depends on your base, number of transfers and driving confidence rather than on Albania as a whole. Compare the benefit with the main friction in each scenario.
City weekend
A car rarely helps in central Tirana: the main sights are walkable and parking adds another task.

One beach resort
If your hotel, beach and evening area are close together, a rental may sit unused. Compare a transfer with renting only on selected days.

Multi-region itinerary
With several bases, a car reduces transfers and connects the coast, cities and inland areas at your own pace.

Mountains and remote places
A car offers freedom only when the driver is comfortable on narrow, winding sections and the contract permits the chosen access road.

No risky generalisations
How to check your licence and documents
Rental-company requirements can be stricter and can vary by issuing country, licence language, driver age and vehicle class. Obtain written confirmation before paying.
Check the licence
Validity, category, name and the condition of the original document must match the trip and booking.
Clarify language and IDP
Tell the company the issuing country and licence format. Ask whether a translation or IDP is required for this rental.
Get written confirmation
Save the email or message with your booking. A verbal promise is harder to prove at pickup.
Carry the originals
Carry the national licence, passport, contract, insurance documents and the IDP if confirmed as necessary.
An International Driving Permit (IDP) supplements a valid national licence; it does not replace it. Do not assume it is always required or never needed: check the rental company and official rules for your documents.

How to choose the car
Compact car
Useful in towns, car parks and on the paved Riviera. Check that passengers and luggage fit without leaving belongings visible.
Automatic transmission
Book a confirmed class and retain the booking wording. “Or similar” does not always guarantee a particular transmission.
SUV without assumptions
Extra clearance does not authorise off-road use or cancel contract exclusions. A larger vehicle can be less convenient on narrow streets.
For mountain sections
Sound tyres, brakes, lights, range and permitted road surfaces matter more than the marketing name of the class.
Contract lens
Decode the rental contract
A package name does not reveal how much you actually risk. Look for the liability amount, deposit, exclusions and claims procedure.
Third-party liability
Check limits and territory. The term does not automatically cover damage to the rental vehicle.
Collision damage waiver
Confirm whether CDW reduces liability, to what amount and with which exclusions.
Theft protection
Check requirements for keys, documents and police reporting, plus the remaining liability.
Contractual liability amount
This is the amount that should appear clearly, with currency, separately from the deposit.
Funds held or charged
Clarify the method, cardholder, release timing and reasons for deductions.
Questions before payment
The marketing phrase “full insurance” is not enough without a written excess amount and a list of exclusions.

Before the first kilometre
A complete pickup and return record
A condition record protects both sides. Capture it methodically in good light so the vehicle and timing are clear.
At pickup
- Every side of the body and the vehicle identifier.
- Wheels, tyres, glass, mirrors and lower edges.
- Interior, boot and supplied equipment.
- Dashboard, mileage and warning lights.
- Fuel level and agreed return policy.
- Every mark is recorded before departure.
At return
- Return in daylight where possible.
- Repeat photos, video, mileage and fuel level.
- Keep the receipt, contract and correspondence.
- Request confirmation that the rental is closed and the deposit released.

Road conditions change with the route
Roads and driving style
Follow road signs and current ARRSH notices. Do not carry motorway pace onto a mountain access road, and do not plan a long first drive immediately after landing or in darkness.
Tirana
Dense traffic, motorcycles, pedestrians and parking call for a calm pace and attention at junctions.
Coast
Main roads are scenic but can be winding and busy in season. Leave buffer time and stop for views only where it is safe.
Mountain passes
Weather, visibility and fatigue matter more than map distance. Use engine braking and do not overtake without a clear view.
Remote access roads
Check surface, turning room, phone signal and contractual permission before leaving the main road. A mapped road is not a guarantee of rental-car suitability.
Seat belts, sober driving, no handheld phone use, safe overtaking and sign-compliant parking are basic discipline. We do not publish changing fine amounts or universal speed figures; follow current signs and official rules.

Parking, fuel and breakdowns
Parking
Read road markings and signs, check payment locally and leave no belongings visible. Ask your accommodation about legal overnight parking.
Fuel
Match the fuel type to the contract and filler cap. Keep the final fuel receipt if the return policy requires it.
Breakdown
Stop safely, call the rental company and follow its instructions. Do not arrange repairs or towing without written authorisation except for necessary emergency action.
Where a car genuinely helps
Road-trip directions
These are access and risk scenarios, not a second seven-day itinerary. Open the places on the main map and check the final road section separately.
Riviera and SH8
Llogara and Porto Palermo fit naturally into a road day. Gjipe requires a separate check of the final access and permitted parking.
Before leaving: Do not plan the pass after dark; do not assume beach access conditions are permanent.
Coast and lagoons
Cape Rodon and Karavasta offer different landscapes but need not be forced into one day. Consider daylight and the return drive.

Koman and the north
Road time matters more than straight-line distance. Coordinate the car with ferry and overnight logistics rather than arriving without buffer.

Bovilla and inland Albania
Bovilla looks close to Tirana while Bënja lies much farther south; both show why the final section needs its own assessment.
Before leaving: Do not confuse off-road excursions with permitted use of a standard rental car.
The contract controls the border
Taking a rental car out of Albania
Cross-border use is not implied by the rental itself. Obtain written permission and verify insurance, assistance and documents for every country on the route.

Greece
Check permission, insurance and assistance specifically for Greece; EU membership does not replace rental-company consent.
Kosovo
Clarify insurance-document recognition, required paperwork and the company procedure for this destination.
Montenegro
Do not assume a neighbouring border is automatically allowed: have the country named in the permission and insurance.
North Macedonia
Repeat the same contractual checklist: country, documents, insurance, support and return rules.

After a collision
People’s safety comes before the vehicle. After immediate action, follow police and rental-company instructions because insurance handling depends on documents and reporting deadlines.

Car rental and driving FAQ
Do I need an IDP to rent in Albania?
There is no universal answer without the issuing country, licence language and company terms. An IDP supplements the national licence. Ask the rental company for written confirmation before paying.
Can I rent without a credit card?
It depends on the company, rate and deposit method. Confirm the accepted card type, cardholder and whether funds are held or charged.
What does “full insurance” mean?
It remains marketing language until the contract states the excess, deposit, territory and exclusions for glass, tyres, underbody, roof, keys and towing.
Do I need an SUV?
For towns and the paved Riviera, size and condition usually matter more. An SUV does not authorise roads forbidden by the contract.
Is night driving safe?
Avoid unfamiliar mountain and remote sections at night. Fatigue, visibility, animals and surface conditions make daylight the safer buffer.
Can I drive to Gjipe, Bovilla or Koman?
You can plan the direction, but check the current final section, weather, parking and contract-permitted surfaces. Each place needs different preparation.
Can I cross into neighbouring countries?
Only when the rental company gives written permission for the named country and confirms documents, insurance and assistance. Geography or EU membership does not grant automatic permission.
Do I need a car in Tirana?
Usually not for the central itinerary, which is mostly walkable. A car is more useful on the day you leave the capital than while exploring its centre.
