The road above the Ionian Sea near Llogara Pass

Southern loop · 7 days · car

Seven days in Albania, without racing across the country.

This route links contemporary Tirana, two UNESCO towns and the Ionian coast. It assumes seven full days, six nights and a rental car, with margin for mountain roads, parking and unplanned stops.

Route loop Tirana → Berat → Gjirokastër → Sarandë → Himarë → Tirana

Why only the south?

Theth, Valbona and Koman deserve a separate northern route. Adding the Alps would turn this week into a chain of early starts. This plan leaves time to experience each place after arrival, rather than merely driving between them.

Before booking

Four decisions that keep the route intact.

7 × 24h
01

Seven full days

Arrival day and an early departure are not full touring days. Add a Tirana night for a low-stress flight.

02

Compact rental car

A smaller car is easier in historic quarters. Check insurance, deposit and the policy for unpaved roads.

03

Five bases, not seven

Two nights in Sarandë reduce repacking. The other stays are Tirana, Berat, Gjirokastër and Himarë.

04

One optional stop per day

Keep the option to drop a beach, castle or café without breaking the entire plan.

Day by day

Driving times are planning ranges, not navigation guarantees. Add extra margin in summer, at weekends and near beaches.

  1. 01
    TIA airport → central Tirana

Tirana: read the country before the road

Driving30–60 minutes, longer at peak times
    OvernightTirana

Do not collect the car immediately after a late arrival: central Tirana is easier on foot and parking becomes an unnecessary task. Use day one to understand the country’s contemporary rhythm.

    First half of the day

Start at Skanderbeg Square and Bunk’Art 2. Together they form a compact introduction to recent history and make the rest of the city easier to read.

    Afternoon

Walk to the Pyramid, then finish at the New Bazaar or in Blloku. Skip Mount Dajti if arrival has already taken half the day.

  2. 02
    Tirana → Berat

Berat: a living town inside its citadel

Driving2–2.5 hours including the city exit
    OvernightBerat
Berat: a living town inside its citadel

Arrive before lunch and leave the car at your accommodation. Berat works on foot: Mangalem and Gorica sit by the river, while the citadel remains a lived-in neighbourhood rather than a stage set.

    First half of the day

Leave after breakfast without inserting another excursion. Near Berat, distance alone is misleading because urban traffic changes the calculation.

    Afternoon

Climb to the citadel, visit the Onufri Museum, then descend towards Mangalem and Gorica Bridge. Soft evening light is the strongest reason to stay overnight.

  3. 03
    Berat → Gjirokastër

Gjirokastër: stone, slopes and a slow evening

Driving3–3.5 hours without a long stop
    OvernightGjirokastër
Gjirokastër: stone, slopes and a slow evening

This is the steady transfer south. Do not add Osum Canyon: it deserves a separate day and breaks the logic of the loop.

    First half of the day

Keep an hour for quiet morning Berat, then head south with only a short coffee or lunch stop.

    Afternoon

Leave the car below the bazaar, climb to the castle and choose one museum house. The stone streets are steep; good shoes matter more than a packed checklist.

  4. 04
    Gjirokastër → Syri i Kaltër → Sarandë

The Blue Eye and a first evening by the sea

    Driving2.5–3.5 hours including access roads
    OvernightSarandë

This shorter-distance day creates breathing room. Visit the Blue Eye earlier, then avoid scheduling another major sight after reaching Sarandë.

    First half of the day

Leave after breakfast for Syri i Kaltër. There is a walk from the parking area, so budget more than the driving time alone.

    Afternoon

Check in at Sarandë, rest, then head to Lëkurësi Castle towards sunset. Save dinner for the waterfront.

  5. 05
    Sarandë → Butrint → Ksamil → Sarandë

Butrint and Ksamil: heritage before the beach

    Driving1–1.5 hours of actual driving
    OvernightSarandë
Butrint and Ksamil: heritage before the beach

Butrint is a three-to-four-hour visit, not a photo stop. Put it first while the air is cooler, then leave the beach for the afternoon.

    First half of the day

Arrive at opening time or soon after. The route passes through the theatre, baths, basilica and woodland; carry water and sun protection even under cloud.

    Afternoon

Stop at Ksamil only after Butrint. In peak season, choose a beach partly by available parking and do not expect solitude.

  6. 06
Sarandë → Porto Palermo → Himarë

The Ionian road: choose rather than collect

    Driving2.5–4 hours excluding long stops
    OvernightHimarë
The Ionian road: choose rather than collect

This is a beautiful driving day, but bends and coastal traffic slow the pace. Choose either Porto Palermo Castle or a long Gjipe stop; doing both properly will consume the evening.

    First half of the day

Leave Sarandë before the main beach traffic. Take a short coffee stop near Borsh or Qeparo without turning it into another full excursion.

    Afternoon

Visit Porto Palermo, then check in at Himarë. If choosing Gjipe, account for the walk and access conditions; for a brief visit, save the canyon for another trip.

  7. 07
    Himarë → Llogara → Tirana / TIA

Llogara and the return to Tirana

Driving4–5.5 hours to Tirana, excluding airport margin
OvernightTirana, or a late-evening flight only
Llogara and the return to Tirana

Do not attach the final day to a midday flight. Weather, road works and summer traffic make this transfer less predictable than a flat motorway drive.

    First half of the day

Leave early. Stop at Llogara only in good visibility and safe road conditions; the tunnel route may bypass the old pass road.

    Afternoon

Return the car with time for fuel, inspection and a possible queue. For a morning or midday flight, add a seventh night in Tirana and fly the next day.

Route logic

Plan energy, not kilometres.

01

Cultural sites early

Butrint and the castles are more comfortable before midday heat and the main groups.

02

Beach after the main sight

A longer beach stop will not force you to rush the heritage site.

03

Stay where the evening matters

Berat, Gjirokastër and Himarë improve after day visitors leave.

04

No night transfers

Unfamiliar bends are tiring, while the route’s best views disappear after dark anyway.

Short answers

What travellers usually change

01Can I follow this route without a car?

Not at the same pace. Major towns have transport, but the Blue Eye, Butrint and coastal stops require taxis, tours or extra time. Without a car, remove Himarë or add two days.

02Where should I add an extra night?

For the sea, add Himarë; for a calm departure, Tirana; for architecture and food, Gjirokastër.

03Should I include Vlorë?

Only as a substitution, not an addition. Stay in Vlorë instead of Himarë if an urban waterfront and easier final transfer matter more.

04Does the route work in September?

Yes, though sea and weather conditions are never guaranteed. Daylight is shorter, so start coastal transfers early and check the forecast before Llogara.

05When should accommodation be booked?

In summer, book at least Sarandë, Himarë and parking in the historic towns ahead. Outside peak season you can stay flexible, but never assume parking without confirmation.
