Ionian: coves, pebbles and mountains
The south from Vlorë to Sarandë and Ksamil is more dramatic and photogenic, with clear water, pebbly shores, winding roads and small coves. Choose it for scenery, while allowing more effort for driving and parking.
Adriatic: sand and easier logistics
The coast around Durrës, Golem and Shëngjin is flatter, mostly sandy and closer to Tirana. It is practical for families and short breaks, though usually less intimate than the Riviera.
Southern coast

Ksamil suits a trip built around swimming and a short visit to Butrint. The water and small coves are genuinely striking, but space, parking and quiet become scarce in peak season.

Sarandë

Durrës and Golem are closer to Tirana airport, with long sandy sections, broad accommodation choice and familiar resort infrastructure. They are practical for families, but in summer compare the exact area, beach crowding and the real walk from hotel to shore.

Ksamil or Sarandë? Himarë or Dhërmi?
Ksamil or Sarandë
Choose Ksamil when the beach is the main event and you accept resort density. Choose Sarandë for restaurants, evening walks, excursions and a car-free trip. A useful compromise is to stay in Sarandë and visit Ksamil outside the busiest hours.
Himarë or Dhërmi
Himarë is better for independent travel, varied beaches and calmer evenings. Choose Dhërmi for a striking hotel, beach clubs and a particular scene. Himarë is usually more practical without a car, but seasonal transport still needs checking.
When to go
Albania’s beach season
June
Long days, a summer feel and usually less crowding than peak season. A strong compromise for exploring the Riviera.
July and August
The warmest and liveliest period, but also the highest demand, traffic and beach occupancy. Plan Ksamil and Dhërmi well ahead.
September
The sea retains summer warmth while the pace gradually softens after the start of the month. It is one of the most comfortable periods for a week in the south.

For car-free convenience choose Sarandë. With a car and for Riviera variety choose Himarë. With young children and for sand, Durrës or Golem is often simpler.
02Where are Albania’s sandy beaches?
Sand is more typical on the Adriatic coast around Durrës, Golem, Shëngjin and Velipojë. The Ionian coast more often has pebbles, platforms and small mixed coves.
03Can you visit the Albanian Riviera without a car?
Yes, if you choose Sarandë or central Himarë and verify intercity transport and transfers in advance. A car is much more useful for remote coves, Borsh, Qeparo and a flexible itinerary.
04Where should families stay in Albania?
For sand, gentler entry and easier logistics, families often choose Durrës or Golem. Ksamil has attractive water but is tighter in peak season. Always check the exact beach and hotel, as shore conditions vary within each resort.
05Is Ksamil overrated?
Its coves are genuinely beautiful, but empty-beach expectations do not match July and August. Treat Ksamil as a popular resort and consider June, September or early hours.
06How many resorts should you combine in one week?
One base or two nearby areas is usually enough. Sarandë plus Himarë, for example, is more rewarding than linking Durrës, Vlorë and Ksamil through constant moves.
