Read the city from top to bottom
Historic Berat is not a single “city of a thousand windows” quarter. It is the relationship between an inhabited castle, hillside houses, the river and the opposite bank.
Kala
An inhabited fortified quarter of homes, religious buildings, ruins and long valley views.
Mangalem
White facades and dark roofs climb the slope; lanes link the castle to the river, making the descent a physical part of the route.
Osum and Gorica
The bridge changes the viewpoint: from Gorica, Mangalem and Kala align into one vertical silhouette.

A route that works with the terrain
Start above while it is cooler, then descend gradually towards the river. Time windows set the pace but do not replace checking current museum hours.

Take the cobbles slowly and do not treat lived-in lanes as a photo set. Closed footwear matters more than the number of pictures.

The second museum covers the house, crafts and everyday life. On a short visit, skip it rather than cutting Kala and the river crossing.

After the vertical route, pause on level ground by the river. From here, the quarters make more sense and you can judge how much energy remains for Gorica.

Do not treat the bridge as a separate tick box. Crossing the Osum turns the city around and links Mangalem with the quieter opposite bank.

Gorica and the view back
Walk a little into the quarter and look back towards Mangalem. Evening light explains the famous rhythm of windows better than any label.
If you arrive late, reduce the route to Mangalem, the riverfront, the bridge and Gorica. Keep Kala only when daylight and a safe descent still fit.

Kala is a lived-in castle
Kala remains an inhabited quarter within fortifications. Churches, a mosque, ruins and the museum sit among homes, so the visit is about more than views: respect private doors, courtyards and everyday life.

Do not add both museums automatically. The choice depends on time and whether you want religious art or the texture of an urban household.
Onufri National Museum
Iconography and religious art inside Kala. It fits naturally into the castle route and usually suits a short first visit.

Start at the top
The climb to Kala consumes energy and cooler hours. When possible, begin above and descend.
Closed shoes and water
Smooth stone and steep sections matter more than the urban distance shown on a map.
Leave luggage behind
A suitcase turns a short old lane into a difficult route. Confirm storage or vehicle access in advance.
Accessibility is limited
Cobbles, steps and gradients limit pushchairs and reduced mobility. Build a shorter riverfront-and-bridge route instead.
Stay or go
Day trip or overnight
An overnight stay is not essential, but it changes the quality of the visit: fewer climbs in succession, softer light and a calmer morning before heading south.
Leave in the evening
Works with an early arrival and one museum. Keep road margin and do not begin a long transfer when tired.

What not to combine in one day
Kala, two museums, Bogovë and Osum
These are four different paces and too much driving after the slopes.
Full Berat and full Gjirokastër
Both towns demand climbs and attention. The drive between them does not make one compact visit.
A long drive after sunset
After cobbles and heat, fatigue matters more than one saved hour. Staying overnight can be the rational choice.
Kala at the hottest hour
If there is no alternative, shorten the loop and add water and shaded pauses.
Before and after the walk
Practical logistics
Walk the historic centre
A car does not help in the old lanes. Leave it at your stay or a confirmed place and connect the quarters on foot.
Confirm parking in advance
“Parking nearby” does not explain gradient, access or the walk to the entrance. Ask your accommodation for the exact point and instructions.
Check transport before travel
Intercity departures and boarding points can change. Do not treat an old timetable as a guarantee.
